I know this might seem a little off topic, but your parents may not have a fault that BT need to fix. If the router is dropping that regularly, then it could be a common but little-known fault present in the majority of major brand routers.

It stems from a certain chip, called the TI-AR7 and it’s bad handling of a ‘loss of margin’ (essentially some normal level interference that would temporarily impact your line’s speed). This causes the router to end up fighting the exchange equipment; the TI-AR7 takes a no-compromise approach to speed even if that makes the line unstable, and the exchange always favours stability and to do this it will try to change the SnR margin which just causes the router to start over again.

The regularity of this issue is most commonly 5m 12s, or 5m 31s. I see this every day, and unfortunately the only manufacturers that have actually been willing to discuss it with us have been Netgear and Solwise.

Netgear have firmware updates for their flagship router, the DG834v2 and DG834v3; if your parents have one of these please update the firmware with the newest one on their site as soon as possible, factory resetting the router in the process and then see if there is any improvement.

You have very little to lose and it could prevent your parents having a permanently unstable connection and steady stream of unnecessary engineers, and possibly a load of £166 BT charges for visits that aren’t needed.

If you’re wondering how I know all this, I work for Zen Internet :)

    Chap,

I really don’t understand this stuff at all. It leaves me feeling very old and out of touch. Nothing new there then!
